On Tuesday, Jan. 10 at 9:12 a.m., officers were dispatched to a home on North Indiana Avenue for a 911 report of a male attempting to break into a shed on the caller’s property. Officer James Eckert arrived and made contact with the caller, obtaining a photograph and description of the suspect.

At 10:40 a.m., patrol officers were then dispatched to a call from a concerned citizen who saw a man walking in the 1900 block of Bacharach Boulevard carrying a rifle. Officer Leah Giercyk arrived and spoke to the caller and obtained a description of the male suspect. The description of the male matched the description of the earlier burglary suspect from Indiana Avenue.

At approximately 10:51 a.m, Sergeant Mohammed Kaiser observed a male, Victor Martinez, matching the suspect's description in the Martin Luther King Boulevard and Hummock Avenue area, police said.

Martinez,51, of Atlantic City, was carrying what appeared to be a rifle around his shoulder and was quickly taken into custody without incident. It was soon determined that the rifle was a toy gun, police said.

Martinez was also in possession of property belonging to another victim unrelated to the original caller, police said. The ensuing investigation conducted by officers and detectives of the Criminal Investigations Section confirmed the property and imitation rifle Martinez was in possession of belonged to a resident from a home in the 300 block of Indiana Avenue that had also been burglarized.

Martinez was charged with burglary, theft, criminal mischief, possession of an imitation firearm, creating a false public alarm, and receiving stolen property. He was being held in the Atlantic County Justice Facility.

Anyone with information about this incident or to report a burglary is urged to contact the Atlantic City Police Department Criminal Investigations Section at 609-347-5766. Information can be texted to tip411 (847411). Begin the text with ACPD. All texts are anonymous.
